Why do people become sperm donors?

People choose to donate for many different reasons.

You might choose to donate to help people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to have a child. Perhaps you have seen friends or family experience fertility challenges, or you might have children of your own and understand the importance of family to so many.

Regardless of the reason for your decision to donate, we want you to take the time to understand the process, including the long-term implications of donation, so you can make an informed decision that feels right for you.

Who needs donor sperm?

There are many different people who need the help of a sperm donor to grow their family, including:

  • Individuals pursuing parenthood on their own
  • Same-sex couples
  • Trans and gender-diverse individuals and couples
  • People experiencing infertility

Every donation has the potential to make a meaningful difference to someone's dream of growing a family.

Who can become a sperm donor?

All potential sperm donors will need to complete a screening process to determine if they can donate. While every application is assessed individually, there are some basic requirements all donors must meet, including:

  • Be aged between 21 and 41 ½ years of age
  • Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident or hold on eligible visa with at least 9 months remaining
  • Live a healthy lifestyle with semen quality that meets our clinical requirements
  • Willing and able to provide information about your own health and your immediate family's medical history
  • Agree to notify us if any significant health information about you becomes available in the future
  • Agree to the release of non-identifying information (e.g interests and hobbies) about you to recipients
  • Consent to the release of identifying information about you (e.g. DOB) to any donor-conceived children once they reach the age specified by legislation in their state or territory (usually 18 years of age)
  • Provide information relating to any previous, current or planned donations with other clinics in Australia or overseas
  • Be able to attend one of our clinics located in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth for your donation visits

Not sure if you're eligble?

That's ok. Many people are unsure whether they meet every requirement, and not every situation fits neatly into a checklist. If you're interested in becoming a donor, we would love to hear from you.
